PPF vs Ceramic Coating: Which One?

The key difference: PPF is a thick clear film that absorbs stone chips and scratches, while ceramic coating is a very thin layer that adds gloss and repels water and dust but will not stop a stone chip. If chips on the front are your problem, choose PPF. If you want shine and easy washing, choose ceramic.

Quick comparison

Stone chip protection

PPF: yes, that is its main job. Ceramic: no.

Light scratch protection

PPF: yes, and some films self-heal light scratches with heat. Ceramic: only reduces very fine wash marks.

Gloss and water beading

PPF: good gloss. Ceramic: deep gloss and strong water and dust repellence.

Price

PPF costs much more, especially full-body. Ceramic costs less.

When to choose PPF

  • You drive a lot on highways between cities
  • Your car is new or valuable and you want to keep the factory paint
  • You plan to sell the car and want the paint in top condition
  • The front already has stone chips and you want to stop more

When to choose ceramic coating

  • You want deep gloss and a richer colour
  • You wash often because of dust and want it to be easier
  • Your car is parked in the sun and you want protection from fading
  • Full PPF is outside your budget

What many customers choose: both

You do not have to pick one. The most requested option at our shop is PPF on the front (bumper, bonnet, wings and mirrors), where the stones hit, and ceramic coating on the rest of the car and over the film for gloss and easy washing.

That gives you strong protection where you need it, plus shine and easy washing everywhere, for less than full-body PPF.

Frequently asked questions

Can ceramic coating go over PPF?

Yes, and it is common. Ceramic on top of the film adds gloss and makes it easier to wash.

Which lasts longer?

It depends on the product and care. We explain the warranty for each option, which starts from 1 year.

Do I need a polish before either?

On used cars, usually yes, because both film and coating preserve the paint underneath as it is.
